Healthy Choices Equal Healthy Teeth By Dr. Stephanie DeFilippo

Healthy Choices Equal Healthy Teeth
By Dr. Stephanie DeFilippo

It is commonly known that nutritious foods keep our bodies healthy, but these foods also keep our teeth strong and cavity free. It is important to feed your family a well balanced diet from all food groups. Many children today receive too many heavily sugared, fatty meals that make them heavy and lethargic. These same foods commonly cause tooth decay. As a pediatric dentist, I commonly get asked about good snacks to send for school. I tell them crunchy foods like carrots, apples and celery help clean the teeth naturally. These foods are a better choice for a snack as opposed to raisins, fruit snacks and chocolate, which can cause cavities. Stay away from processed foods, like chips, and choose more natural fruits and vegetables. Now that it is getting warmer, many areas have farmer’s markets, which highlight fresh produce.

What about drinks? With spring and summer sports coming up, it is important to discuss sports drinks. Many parents are not aware that sports drinks can contain large amounts of sugar and acids. When consumed, these drinks break down the enamel layer of your child’s teeth and cause tooth decay. Juice is another tricky option. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children from the ages of 1 to 6 should only consume 4-6 ounces of juice a day. Juice should be limited to mealtimes and diluted with water. Soda should never be an option for children. Read the label and find a sport drink that has low or no sugar. Water is a better option for you and your family and should be the only thing consumed after nighttime brushing. And, never let a child take anything but water to bed with them. Doing this will only lead to cavities and pain for your child.

I also get questions about children chewing gum. I always recommend giving gum with xylitol sugar. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry approves the use of xylitol to help reduce tooth decay and the prevalence of the bacteria that cause cavities. Tooth decay is a bacteria that can be passed around families like the flu. A mother with cavities can pass her bacteria to her child through her saliva. Along with getting regular dental cleanings and treating the tooth decay, a mom can chew xylitol gum to help keep her intra oral bacteria controlled. Look on the ingredient list of the gum package to make sure that xylitol is listed first. It is commonly found in health food stores, but is starting to be found in more popular brands of chewing gum.

Find a dental home for your family with a dentist that you trust. Talk about healthy food options for your family and stress brushing and flossing every day. A healthy mouth is the first step to having a healthy body.

The Benefits of Good Oral Hygiene

The Cost Of Dental Treatments
If you develop complications from tooth decay and gum disease, you may be dealing with bills for anything from fillings or crowns to more costly and complicated procedures such as root canals or oral surgery to extract damaged teeth and place dental implants.

The Costs Vary
The costs of dental treatments vary. For example, the cost of a root canal will depend on the location of the tooth and how many canals are in the tooth that needs the root canal treatment.

The Cost of Oral Hygiene
By comparison, the cost of basic oral hygiene and preventive teeth cleaning is low. A toothbrush should be replaced every three months or when it appears worn, but that’s just a few dollars. The same goes for dental floss, whether you prefer specialized floss, such as Oral-B’s Ultra Floss, or standard floss.

Points To Remember
Also, don’t forget that most dental plans cover at least one, and sometimes two, checkups and cleanings per year at little or no cost to you. It’s better to make and keep those appointments, even if you don’t think you have problems with your teeth or oral hygiene, in order to identify and manage potential problems before costly care is required. Remember that your dentist is your partner in oral health, and be sure to keep him or her informed about medications you take and changes in your overall health so your oral hygiene can be tailored accordingly to maximize your health benefits. Some types of medications (including anti-depressants and some heart medications) increase your risk for gingivitis, so be sure to let your dentist know if you start taking any new medication, even if you don’t think it will affect your oral health.

Great Ways to Improve Your Smile # 6

Implants
Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth. Surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. Made of titanium and other materials, implants are designed to hold restorations like crowns or bridges blend in with your other teeth, and are a long-term option for restoring your smile.

Great Ways to Improve Your Smile # 5

Braces
While orthodontic work that begins while a child is growing helps produce optimal results, that doesn’t mean that adults can’t have braces. Thanks to advances in orthodontic treatments, metal brackets are not your only option. Removable aligners, or invisible braces,î or clear plastic brackets can all be used to straighten crooked or crowded teeth.

FEAR… of the Dentist By Eric Seidel, DMD

FEAR… of the Dentist By Eric Seidel, DMD

Every new patient we see in our office receives a questionnaire. One of the questions asks them to rate their anxiety level about receiving dental care on a scale from 1-10. I am always amazed at the amount of high anxiety that we continue to see in 2015. Some of it is generational, where the level and methods of care delivered in the mid-1900's was not anywhere what it is today. Often times anesthesia was not used or even offered. Many senior patients relate stories of childhood trauma received at the hands of dentists. It is often very difficult for them to get beyond this fear although when they do they become some of our favorite and most loyal patients.

Another group that we often see has had very limited exposure to dental care period. For various reasons, they were never given the opportunity to receive quality care from a young age. They, however, were barraged with stories of wisdom tooth extractions or the ever dreaded "root canal". Although they have never had any bad experiences personally, others are very quick to fill their heads with stories of what may await them if they should seek care. Unfortunately, most then delay seeking care until things have really become involved and they have to undergo more extensive procedures than if routine care was received and treatment was rendered at an early stage. Today, even extractions and root canals can be done painlessly and relatively easily.

One of our practice goals is to provide optimal care in the most compassionate and comfortable manner possible. It is one of the most rewarding aspects of our career as dentists and dental care providers to be able to take someone with a fear level of "11" and have them tell you after a few visits how you have changed their perception of dentistry forever and they actually enjoy coming to see us. We have multiple things at our disposal today to help make dental care pain and anxiety free. Dental anesthetics, although often needed, care be administered in ways that people often feel little to nothing. They are also much more profound and provide a truly painless experience. Nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas) is a very safe and effective way to help relieve anxiety and make the experience as a whole much more pleasant. Oral sedation can be used in more extreme cases of anxiety. However, I still believe the single most effective way to create a lifetime of good oral health is to introduce children to a good dental home by the age of 1. They will grow up experiencing dentistry without fear and usually have much healthier mouths and brighter dental futures.

If you are part of the 50% of Americans who do not seek routine dental care and fear is the primary reason, I encourage you to explore what modern dentistry has to offer and assure you your fears can be overcome in a pain-free and judgment-free environment by a team of caring professionals. You will not only feel better and be healthier, but you will not have to live with this overwhelming fear that may be getting in the way of you having the healthy mouth and beautiful smile you have always wanted.
